In-Depth Analysis with CT Imaging

Computed tomography (CT) imaging combines rotating x-ray equipment with a digital computer to produce remarkably clear, cross-sectional imaging of body organs and tissues. This technology is especially useful for cardiovascular care because it allows for detailed images of the heart and coronary arteries. The Cardiovascular Center of Marin routinely performs the procedures detailed below:

  • CT Coronary Angiography
CT angiography (CTA) uses x-rays to visualize the circulatory system throughout the body, including the heart. The procedure is minimally invasive and can be performed on an outpatient basis.

  • Calcium Scoring
Cardiac CT for calcium scoring is a noninvasive way of obtaining information about the location and extent of calcified plaque—a buildup of fat and calcium—in the coronary arteries. Calcium is a marker of coronary artery disease. The findings on a cardiac CT, expressed as a calcium score, may help decide what measures can be taken to avoid a heart attack.

  • Peripheral Vascular Angiography
This procedure is used to detect narrowing or blockages in the blood vessels caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD).
